Bittensor wallet guide
- TAO lives on its own blockchain: you need a Bittensor-compatible wallet (addresses start with a "5").
- To hold and stake, one key is enough: the "coldkey". The "hotkey" is only for miners and validators.
- Simplest: a native Bittensor wallet like TAO.com or Taostats. Large amounts: a hardware wallet like Ledger.
A wallet is your digital safe: it holds your TAO and lets you send or stake it. TAO does not live on Ethereum but on Bittensor's own blockchain (Subtensor): MetaMask and most "classic" wallets are not enough.
Bittensor's two keys
It holds your TAO and signs transfers and staking. It is your real wallet: keep it encrypted, ideally offline.
Used by miners and validators to work on a subnet. It holds no money. Not needed if you just want to hold and stake.
Native Bittensor wallets
Built specifically for Bittensor: they only handle TAO and subnet tokens, without the noise of other cryptos. The simplest place to start.
Manage your TAO, stake and make everyday transactions from your phone.
Best for: Getting started on iPhone with a TAO-dedicated wallet.
Send and stake your TAO, with the data and analytics of Taostats, Bittensor's go-to explorer.
Best for: Following your subnets and staking in one place, on mobile or desktop.
Multi-chain wallets
If you already hold other cryptos, these three wallets from the Polkadot ecosystem (which Bittensor is built on) also support TAO natively.
Open source, handles TAO alongside your other crypto.
Best for: Desktop users who already hold several cryptos.
The same wallet on phone and desktop, with built-in staking.
Best for: Staking from both your phone and your browser.
Built for mobile: stake in a few taps.
Best for: People who mostly use their phone.
Test with a small amount first, and check in the app whether you can stake into a specific subnet or only on the root network.

Receive TAO and stake
-
01Copy your address
It's your coldkey address: a long string of characters starting with a "5".
-
02Send a small test amount
From your exchange, send a small amount first, check it arrives, then send the rest.
Going further: create a wallet from the command line (btcli)
The official CLI creates a coldkey and a hotkey, and shows a recovery phrase only once: write it down offline.
pip install bittensor-cli
btcli wallet create -w my_coldkey
btcli wallet balance -w my_coldkey
btcli wallet regen-coldkey -w my_coldkey # restore from the recovery phrase
Every btcli transaction accepts --dry-run, which shows fees and effects without sending anything. Bittensor addresses use the SS58 format.
Safety rules
- Never share your recovery phrase: no support team will ever ask for it.
- If you lose it, nobody can recover your funds. Write it on paper, offline.
- Only install wallets from their official websites: fake sites and fake apps target TAO holders.
- Always send a small test first and double-check the address.
- The coldkey never goes on a server; only hotkeys belong on mining machines.
